Tzedakah, Tikkun Olam for Jewish Communities Abroad During Covid-19

While we are all dealing with the challenges and complexities of life amid a global pandemic, there are some Jewish communities that are suffering with particularly harsh realities. It is our responsibility, in the spirit of tzedakah and tikkun olam, to do whatever we can to assist our brothers and sisters in these difficult circumstances. Following are two ways that you can help raise awareness and contribute financially to Jewish communities in need in Uganda, Hungary, and Spain.

Abayudaya Unity Concert and Fundraising Effort

The Abayudaya people consist of about 2,000 Jews in eastern rural Uganda who rely on farming for food and sustenance. Due to the pandemic, the president of Uganda has ordered all people confined to their homes, with almost no allowances to leave. As a result, millions, including the Abayudaya, have lost regular access to food and water, and are now on the brink of starvation. The Cantors Assembly has organized a special benefit concert entitled, “Abayudaya Unity,” to help this community, and it will premiere on FacebookLive and YouTube Live on Monday evening, May 11, at 8:00 PM EDT. Performers include Noam Katz, Shefa Gold, Elana Brody, Menachem Creditor, and Neshama Carlebach.

Masorti Olami Works Toward $25,000 Fundraising Goal

Masorti Olami has started an emergency campaign with a goal of $25,000 to help the Abayudaya in Uganda as well as at-risk Conservative/Masorti communities in Budapest, Madrid, among others. The money raised will be used to improve dire conditions that have resulted from the pandemic, help to rescue and preserve crucial local aid programs, as well as deliver basic items like food and cleaning supplies to those who need them most. The organization has set up a Go Fund Me page with more information about these communities and their individual needs. Click here for information and to contribute.
