Reflection on My Time With USY on Wheels

I recently had the pleasure of spending a few incredible days with the USY Wheels bus during their visit to Los Angeles, California. It was a true privilege to witness firsthand the spirit of this group and the growth that has taken place since they first hit the road in Somerset NJ.

By the time I joined them in LA, the bus was well into the second half of their journey, and it was clear that something special had formed among the teens. From the way they supported one another to the laughter that echoed through every activity, I saw a group that had truly become a family.

Our time together began with a fun-filled beach afternoon at the Santa Monica Pier. The teens were so excited to dip their toes in the (cold) water, enjoy the shops, and soak in the vibrant energy of the area. We shared a quick dinner before watching the sun set over the hills. The next day brought the magic of Disneyland. The teens had the best time exploring the park, going on rides, and enjoying each other’s company. We even extended our stay into the evening to watch the castle show and fireworks. The adventure continued with exploring the best of LA: walking along Hollywood Blvd, visiting the Griffith Observatory, hiking to view the Hollywood sign, enjoying dinner in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood, and even giving back through volunteer work at Operation Gratitude.

More than anything else, it was the teens themselves who left the biggest impression on me. They were consistently respectful, responsible, and kind. I saw them show up on time, stay in their groups, include one another, and go out of their way to help. They’ve created a community rooted in friendship, laughter, positive energy and shared values. It was truly inspiring.

I also had the opportunity to travel with my own family, and I was deeply moved by how warmly the teens welcomed my two boys. They included them in their count-off, va’adot jobs, and even games – treating them like part of the Wheels mishpacha.

None of this would be possible without the incredible staff who guide, support, and inspire these teens each day. Their dedication and leadership create the foundation for all the learning, joy, and connection that happens on the road.

As the group continues into the second half of their journey, it’s clear these teens are thriving. They are growing as individuals and as a community, embracing every opportunity with enthusiasm, curiosity, and heart. Their Jewish journey has been just as meaningful — from celebrating Shabbat together across different cities, to engaging in acts of chesed, to exploring what it means to live Jewishly on the road. It’s been inspiring to witness their growth, and I look forward to seeing all that lies ahead as they continue rolling toward new adventures and deeper connections to themselves, each other, and the Jewish people.

With pride and gratitude,
