Operation Isaiah
Everything You Need for a Successful High Holiday Food Drive
Join the Movement-wide project Operation Isaiah and feed the hungry.
Food is a beloved central feature of most Jewish holidays. The fast of Yom Kippur, by definition, demands no special foods. Among the several explanations for why we fast is to sensitize us that there are those in our midst who experience hunger not just one day, but every day.
However, it’s Isaiah’s tirade that calls us to action. We read his words as the Haftarah each Yom Kippur. As we gather amidst our fast, Isaiah shouts at the top of his lungs that a mere fast is not what God desires. Rather, the fast can only be effective when accompanied by acts of social justice: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless.
Responding directly to the prophet Isaiah’s demand, Conservative/Masorti synagogues continent-wide are urging their attendees to come to Kol Nidre services bearing bags of non-perishable food to be distributed to local food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens. By doing so, we dramatically begin the new Jewish year, placing the mitzvah of hunger relief at the top of our collective agenda.
