Nasenyi, Uganda — The Jewish Educators Assembly (JEA), in partnership with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ), has successfully completed a nationwide book drive to support Jewish education in Nasenyi, a rural Abayudaya community located in eastern Uganda near Mbale.

The initiative began when Shoshana McKinney, Executive Director of Tikvah Hadasha Uganda, reached out to Rabbi Robin Foonberg, Education Specialist for USCJ and Executive Director of the JEA, to request educational resources for the Nasenyi Jewish school. In response, the JEA launched a broad appeal to educators and congregations across North America.

The effort resulted in the collection of approximately 25 boxes of books, encompassing Hebrew language materials, Torah study guides, Jewish history, life cycle education, literature, and more. These resources will enhance Jewish learning opportunities for students and educators in Nasenyi, providing vital tools for study, connection, and community growth.

“The dedication of our educators and the generosity of our members reflect the very heart of Jewish learning—sharing knowledge to strengthen Jewish life wherever it flourishes,” said Rabbi Foonberg. “We are proud to stand in partnership with Tikvah Hadasha Uganda and the Abayudaya community.”

The Nasenyi community, part of Uganda’s historic Abayudaya Jews, practices Masorti (Conservative) Judaism and maintains a strong commitment to education, faith, and cultural continuity. The JEA’s donation represents a meaningful step in building bridges between Jewish communities worldwide through the shared value of learning.
