Senior Director of Synagogue Leadership

Mission Critical: This position is the Senior Director of the Department of Synagogue Leadership, supervising staff who provide programmatic and consultancy services to USCJ member congregations throughout North America and manage a portfolio of congregational relationships of their own. The senior director will also lead a process for USCJ to determine how to best serve and support our member synagogues. 

Position Purpose 

Helping synagogues thrive is the core of USCJ’s work. Our synagogues need to evaluate and strengthen every aspect of their work, becoming relational centers for prayer, education, caring, and community action. The Senior Director for the Department of Synagogue Leadership is: 

1. A thought leader on the current landscape and future direction of synagogues. 2. The lead professional responsible for ensuring that our 560 member synagogues have awareness of and access to key USCJ programs and services 

3. The team leader supervising the Director of Synagogue Leadership & Innovation, five synagogue consultants 

4. A consultant providing synagogue services directly to a portfolio of congregations (currently in the Mid-Atlantic Region – Philadelphia metro area and New Jersey) 5. Serve as the department representative to the senior staff and USCJ Board. Liaison to the District Leadership Committee (DLC) and the Synagogue Leadership committee (SLC) 

Duties and Responsibilities 

A. Thought Leader and Lead Professional 

a. Envision the future of synagogues, understand the leadership and managerial needs of congregations 

b. Develop thought pieces (articles, blogs, etc.) to create conversations around the future of synagogue life and leadership. 

c. Create and curate resources in partnership with other department staff to support synagogue transformation, innovation, and needed leadership 

training 

d. Develop and implement strategic solutions to more effectively engage our congregations.

e. Represent and serve as primary partner with key strategic partners (e.g. Joint Placement Commission, Rabbinical Assembly, JEA, Institute for Southern 

Jewish Life, etc.) 

B. Department Team Leader 

a. Supervise the Director of Synagogue Leadership & Innovation and the 5 other Synagogue Consultants 

b. Establish departmental goals and key performance indicators for both 

synagogue consultants and the leadership development team 

c. Determine departmental priorities and evaluate staff, programs, and 

departmental structure, based on goals and key indicators of impact. 

d. Develop trainings for department staff and others in organization to further their knowledge of synagogues and other relevant skills 

e. Work closely with other Senior Staff, in the organization , especially the Sr. Director of Teen Engagement and Sr. Director of Affiliations and Operations. f. Prepare reports as needed for Senior Leadership, the Board and lay leadership g. Run regular Synagogue Consultant and departmental meetings 

C. Synagogue Consultant 

a. Serve as the primary point of contact with a portfolio of congregations in USCJ’s network to build relationships and engage congregational leaders. 

Ensure excellent customer service and connection with the opportunities and programs of USCJ and/or collaborating organizations 

b. Serve as the lead community organizer and network weaver, identifying talented professionals and lay leaders who have the potential to benefit other congregations and the network as a whole 

c. Serve as the main contact for assigned congregations on leadership 

development, professional placement, dues, and USCJ resources. Work closely with the Development department on identifying potential donors and Board members 

d. Plan virtual, on-line, or in-person USCJ leadership development workshops for their portfolio of synagogues that focus on the work of rabbis, presidents, 

boards, executive directors and education directors 

e. Liaison with the District Council, including organizing regular meetings. f. Facilitate regular District leadership meetings for synagogue presidents 

Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises the FT Director of Synagogue Leadership & Innovation, 5 FT Synagogue Consultants, and PT Department Administrator. 

Salary and Benefits: $140,000 plus benefits 

Work Environment: New York office space available, can be a fully remote position; Driving distance to Philadelphia and New York preferred

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work 

● Full-time position 

● Majority of working hours must overlap with Eastern Time Zone 

Travel 

● Travel required; including day visits to congregations and potential multiple-stop overnight trips, in addition to occasional conferences

Preferred Education and Experience 

● Advanced Degree in education, Jewish studies, social work, organizational development, Jewish communal service, and/or rabbinic ordination 

● Extensive knowledge of synagogue leadership, management, governance and programming, as well as specific knowledge of the trends unique to 

Conservative-Masorti synagogues 

● Demonstrated experience in supervising multiple projects simultaneously, both as a lead consultant and supervisor of other consultants 

● 10 years or more of increasing responsibility in management roles 

● Proven ability to develop and support high-performing teams  

● Experience managing and supporting organizational change
