Department Manager - Department of Synagogue Leadership

Position Purpose

To coordinate the programs of departmental staff who provide ongoing contact with congregations, routinely and consistently, learning about the congregations assigned to them and building relationships, in order to provide quality service to our synagogue.

Duties and Responsibilities

(75%) Department Manager Will:

  1. Manage the department’s content calendar, determining what content and convenings need to be produced, and when and where they should be launched.
  2. Responsible for managing all administration for department programs, managing data within the CRM and The Commons
  3. Coordinator of data collection and analysis about congregations to increase knowledge within the network
  4. Work with Finance Department to manage program contracts and payment
  5. Beginning in 2020, serve as the Project Manager of the USCJ Convention

(25%) Synagogue Consultant Will:

  1. Be assigned to a specialty to provide additional consultations to congregations anywhere in the network. For example, a consultant assigned to education will not only provide support for congregations in his/her district, but to any congregation that contacts another consultant and needs the connection.
  2. Supervise ongoing content curation in that specialty area, producing at least one new resource for the network each year. For example, a consultant with a specialty of volunteer engagement may produce a data-driven study on volunteerism in congregations, an asset for volunteer engagement, or a photo essay of model examples of volunteerism in congregations.
  3. Manage the visioning and execution of at least major immersive conference, program or cohort each year.
  4. Supervisory Responsibility: NA

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Full-time position
  • Some evenings and weekends required


  • Some travel required, either day visits to congregations or multi-city trips, depending on the geographic scope of the consultant’s sales territory

Required Education and Experience

  • College degree or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated general knowledge of synagogue leadership, management, governance, and programming, as well as specific knowledge of the trends unique to Conservative synagogues

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Advanced Degree in education, Jewish studies, social work, organizational science, or Jewish communal service
  • 5 years or more relevant experience
