Conservative Jews have an
exciting opportunity to join fellow congregants from all over North
America
in an important mitzvah -- daily Torah study. Perek Yomi, which invites
participants to read a chapter of Tanakh a day, is an
important effort
to bring the entire Conservative Movement together in a program of
learning
and personal growth.
Originally a pilot project
of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism's Council of Regional
Presidents,
Perek Yomi began in spring 1998, involving at that time only the
members
of the Council. Project participants have expressed a good deal of
enthusiasm,
noting that there is a
particular pleasure in studying the same text at the same time as one's
friends and neighbors.
Over the years, through programs
such as Jewish Living Now, the United Synagogue has tried to encourage
Conservative Jews to undertake such study in order to learn the values,
history, literature and language of Judaism. Perek Yomi, which begins
with
the Book of Joshua, is intended to further this process, enhancing the
lives of participants and thereby strengthening the Conservative
Movement.
For further information about
Perek Yomi or to obtain study materials, contact Dr. Morton Siegel,
coordinator
of the project, at The United
Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, 155 Fifth Avenue, New
York, N.Y.
10010, tel: 212-533-7800, ext. 2234. A website and chat room for
participants
will
be
available this fall.
Founded in 1913 by Dr. Solomon
Schechter as the association of Conservative synagogues in North
America,
the United Synagogue serves as a resource to its affiliated
congregations
and works to formulate a Conservative Jewish response to pressing
social
and religious issues.
