May 2008
Hazak Goes To Israel - Hazak, United Synagogue’s group for people 55 and older, ran its first trip to Israel in February; the trip was so successful that people already have begun to sign up for the next one, set for January 2009. We’ll keep you posted on our plans; if you want more information right away, email Jo-Anne Tucker-Zemlak, Arlene Corsover, or Aaron Kischel.
What Does the Congregational Standards Committee Do? - An open letter from the Committee on Congregational Standards explains how it bolsters congregational life.
Counting the Omer - Beginning at the end of the second seder, after we’ve retold the story of our escape from Egypt, we count the omer until we end up at the foot of Mount Sinai on Shavuot – which starts the evening of June 8 this year – waiting to receive the Torah. Click here to learn where we are in the count.
Fixing The World, One Roof At A Time - There are many ways to spend a spring vacation. Forty-five members of United Synagogue's Midwest region, both teenagers and adults, went to Bay St. Louis in Mississippi to dig foundations, frame houses, and patch roofs to help people move back to the region, still devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Travel with USY - More than 700 teens already have signed up for our USY summer programs in Israel, North America, and Europe, but there might still be a few spaces left in some programs. Don’t miss your chance for the summer of a lifetime!
New Directors Institute - Becoming the director of a synagogue school is an extremely worthy undertaking – and a formidable one. We offer support, training, and the hard-earned experience of our staff at the New Directors’ Institute from June 23 to June 27. For more information, check out the brochure or email Serene Victor.
Parents USY Trip to Israel - Parents of teenagers going to Israel with USY can share some of their children’s experience as they, too, tour Israel the USY way with the Parent Pilgrimage to Israel, set for July 16 to 28.
Educators on the Move - If you are taking a new job as a synagogue educator, join us for networking and support from July 30 to July 31. For more information, email Serene Victor.
Imun – United Synagogue’s 2008 intensive 9-day workshop for synagogue skills is set for July 6 to July 14 at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires in upstate New York. For more information, email Rabbi Paul Drazen at drazen@uscj.org.

Remembering Alan Karlsberg - United Synagogue’s New England region honored the memory of Alan Karlsberg, a regional past president and international board member, by honoring 15 people – dedicated volunteers whose modest service embodies the values to which Mr. Karlsberg devoted his life – at the first of what is to be an annual tzedek award luncheon. Here, Sara Abramovitz of Congregation Or Atid in Wayland, Massachussetts, is honored with the Alan Karlsberg Tzedek award; she is flanked by regional president Bruce Creditor and Ronni Karlsberg. What Makes Us a Movement? - More than 150 people came to Adas Israel Congregation in Washington DC to hear Rabbis Bradley Shavit Artson, Jerome Epstein, and Joel Meyers and Cantor Stephen Stein talk about the Conservative movement – what joins us, what defines us, and how we can work together so more of us understand who we are. Celebrating Youth - United Synagogue’s Midwest region hosted an annual concert to benefit its regional youth programs; comedian Joel Chasnoff and the Visions vocal trio performed at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park, Illinois. Ethiopian Israelis Speak at Tarbut Program - United Synagogue’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center reaches out to the Jerusalem community with Tarbut, a program that offers Hebrew-language cultural programming. Here, in its new Culture of Jewish Communities in Israel series, four panelists, Pnina Falego Gaday, Rabbi Yafet Alemu, Shoshana Ben-Dor, and Gadi Yabarkan talked frankly about the issues facing Ethiopian-Israelis. The next program will focus on the French Jewish community.
Bulletin Editors -- Fuchsberg Poster Available - The ad that will appear in the upcoming edition of United Synagogue’s magazine, CJ: Voices of Conservative/Masorti Judaism, can be downloaded and placed in synagogue newsletters and bulletins.
Summer at the Yeshiva - This year, more than 100 students have registered for the summer program at the Conservative Yeshiva, part of United Synagogue’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center. The three-week program, which offers two sessions, one starting June 20 and the other July 20, includes an intensive Hebrew ulpan and a variety of classes at different levels that explore classical Jewish texts.
Spend a Year at the Yeshiva - The Conservative Yeshiva at United Synagogue’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center is now accepting applications for the yearlong program, starting on September 2, that gives students the chance to study for its own sake by teaching them the tools they need to study classic Jewish texts. The fully egalitarian program is open to all Jews of all ages from all streams; information about the program and scholarships and application forms are all available; email yeshiva@uscj.org for more information.
Reception at Fuchsberg - On Monday, June 30, from 6 to 7:45 p.m., the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center will welcome visiting members of United Synagogue’s affiliated congregations at an open house reception.
