Hazak trip to Israel

Hazak in Israel - In mid-February, 45 members of Hazak, United Synagogue’s group for people 55 and over, visited Israel. Seventeen of the travelers, who ages ranged from their 60s to their 90s, had never been in Israel before, and others hadn’t been for decades. Headquartered in Jerusalem, participants, who came from across North America, took day trips around the country, and spent some time as well at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center. This year’s trip, Hazak’s first, was sold out. Click here for information about next year’s trip.

Early childhood directors at the JEA convention

Early Childhood Directors - Early childhood directors from around the country met at the Jewish Educators Assembly’s convention in Chicago. Next year’s JEA conference is set for January 25-28 in Scottsdale, Arizona. The group poses together in the photo at the right.

New USY President - Adam Berman of Columbus, Ohio, has been elected president of USY, and his hometown Jewish newspaper wrote about it.

Israel@60

Schechter Sings - Schools belonging to the Solomon Schechter Day School Assocation are working on an initiative to celebrate Israel's 60th anniversary. The association commissioned a song, Kumi Ori; many schools are teaching it to their students; and the association is releasing a CD of 30 Israeli songs sung by students. This design is being used on posters and t-shirts.

Celebrate Israel the Conservative/Masorti Way - The organizations that make up the Conservative movement, including United Synagogue's Israel Commission, have joined to offer a website that showcases our celebrations as the state of Israel turns 60.

New Ideas

Inclusion - It is our mandate as Jews, as North Americans, and as people to be as inclusive as possible. Here, we describe how United Synagogue’s Commission on Inclusion of People with Disabilities works toward that goal.

What's Happening

Selling Hametz at College (and Beyond) - With Pesach just around the corner, college students will begin making plans for the holiday. Okay, okay, we know your kids, but even they will make their plans – eventually. In the meantime, they can go online to sell the hametz in their dorm rooms and apartments through Koach, United Synagogue’s program for college students. And if you’re no longer a student but you have no outlet through your own synagogue, you also can go to Koach’s website and sell the hametz in your home or office. For more information, email koach@uscj.org.

Passover in Las Vegas - Yes, Passover is a family holiday; we spend it at home, with the people we love. But it’s also a lot of work – maybe for once you’d like to take the family and leave the work behind? Consider joining us in the Ritz Carlton Lake Las Vegas for a Conservative Pesach.

USY This Summer - Many of USY’s summer programs for teenagers are filling quickly, but there still may be some spaces left. Take a look and then act quickly. It can be the summer of your teenager’s lifetime.

Join Your USY Kids in Israel - Parents of teenagers in Israel this summer with USY are invited to join the Summer Parent Pilgrimage to Israel. Experience Israel the USY way!

USY High - USY High, USY’s program for high-school students in Israel, run jointly with Ramah Israel, is now accepting applications.

Today’s Israel - The latest issue of Today’s Israel, a new ezine, is now up.

Fifteen people from around the region will be honored.

Reaching Out to the Intermarried - In February, Rabbi Moshe Edelman spoke to 125 people at the North Shore Jewish Center on Long Island, New York, about reaching out to intermarried families. Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center

Hazak Studies in Israel - Hazak, United Synagogue’s program for people who are 55 and older, offers a study trip to the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center in Israel this summer. From June 22 to July 2, participants will be able to immerse themselves in the richly Jewish atmosphere of Jerusalem as they study ancient texts and explore modern questions through a Conservative lens.

Nativ - Nativ, USY’s yearlong program for post-high school students, is now accepting applications. Nativ students spend one semester at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center, studying either there or at the Hebrew University, and the other semester in a kibbutz or doing another social action project.

Around the Conservative/Masorti World
