Synagogue Affiliation >> How to Become Affiliated

How to Become Affiliated

Recognizing that the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism is essentially a membership organization and that the affiliation of new congregations is a most welcome development, we append a description of the procedure followed for affiliating new congregations.

Please call Faye Gingold at 646-519-9258 or email her at gingold@uscj.org for more information.

Affiliation of a Congregation

  1. The affiliation process is initiated at the regional United Synagogue level. Inquiries concerning membership are always welcomed by United Synagogue's regional and central offices.
  2. The prospective affiliate is provided with background informational material on United Synagogue, including its bylaws and standards, and the regional representatives discuss members' financial obligations.
  3. The congregations sends a completed membership application, signed by the congregation president, and all the other information it has been asked to provide to the regional office, which reviews it. If it is in order, the regional president signs the application.
  4. Next, the application is sent to United Synagogue's Department of Congregational Services, and from there it goes to the Membership Committee for evaluation.
  5. The Membership Committee pays particular attention  to the congregation's bylaws, making sure that they do not counter United Synagogue's standards in any way.
  6. United Synagogue's board of directors votes on whether to accept the congregation to membership.
