Resolving Front Page Authentication Problems

Symptom

You receive multiple user name/password authentication prompts when trying to Open or Publish your Web using the FrontPage software, and cannot Open or Publish your site.

Diagnosis

Security settings on your computer are not compatible with the security settings for your web on our server.

Resolution

One or more of the following methods:

  1. Go to My Computer -> Web Folders -> Add Web folder and enter your USCJ hosted URL (http://yourdomain.org) as the location, and your user name and password. Once you can reach the site that way, you should be able to reach it through FrontPage.
  2. From news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.frontpage.extensions.windowsnt: Try checking the client-side security settings (these are the same for both Internet Explorer and FrontPage). Within FrontPage, select Tools - Options - Proxy Settings, select the Security tab, Internet zone (unless you've place the site in another zone), click on Custom Settings. Scroll down to the User Authentication settings. Make sure that "Automatic logon with current username and password" is selected - NOT Anonymous. This ensures that the user's identity is sent to the web server in the HTTP request, and the web server in turn can use the FP server extensions security settings to authenticate the user.
  3. E-mail webmaster@uscj.org and request that your security level be changed on the server to resolve this issue.
